Woven from Nature

Explore the creative possibilities of ordinary plants.

In Devon we’re lucky to live near some of the most beautiful countryside the UK has to offer.  But how often do we stop to think about the nature that’s right on our doorstep?  This workshop takes a moment to look at the creative possibilities of the most ordinary plants.  We’ll try out paints made from local trees and garden vegetables; we’ll learn to make string (or ‘cord’) from stinging nettles and dandelions; and we’ll draw with charcoal made from twigs.  And then … then we’ll pull together our discoveries and consider what we could offer to nature in return for everything she gives.

Finally, working individually or in pairs, we will make woven hanging decorations using Devon’s natural fibres and cordage made during the session.  We’ll weave in strips of fabric and paper with our messages to nature, and embellish them with seed pods and other natural ‘beads’.

Discovering the fibres that can be found as ‘weeds’ in our gardens and parks

This workshop builds on several years exploring the nature on my own, urban doorstep.  From learning the names of local plants, I saw the need to understand them at a deeper level – their properties, and how they’ve been used in the past, informing how they might again be used in the future.  It’s this exploration and understanding that can help us to rebuild our relationship with nature.  I’m convinced that this needs to begin on our immediate doorstep – the perception that we need to drive out into wild places limits our opportunity and ability to enjoy and connect with nature on a daily basis.

Re-weaving our place in the natural world, thread by thread.

I began (and continue) to share this approach through ‘Nature Doodles’ workshops, and lead Creative Nature Bimbles in my local area.  This workshop builds on the success of both, supporting participants to build an ever deeper relationship with the nature in their neighbourhood.

This session is usually 2.5 hours with up to 12 participants and can be adapted to suit the needs of children and adults of all abilities.

If you have an idea or a question, please contact me – I look forward to exploring the possibilities together!
