Shadow Books

Shadow Books brings a devotion to the natural world together with my long standing fascination with books – their stories, their pictures and their form.

In this workshop we make quirky, playful books using the shadows created by natural objects.  We’ll transform the shadowy shapes into pages and experiment with words and visual motifs to bring our books to life.

Bringing the plant world to life through gentle anthropomorphosis

Inspired by my own shadow book, ‘Weathered’, we’ll use papers pre-coloured with natural dyes and inks, and explore the plants and vegetables that give each colour its vibrance.

Playing with simple approaches to create unique and original characters and stories

I began to specialise in books ten years ago, making board books for and with my children alongside commissions for other families.  At the same time I explored creative formats for a personal diary charting the experience of motherhood.

Discovering the colours that come from cabbage, galls, onion skins and more.

In recent years, I’ve increasingly looked to the natural environment, reflecting my journey of discovery through artist books.  Even now, as the majority of my work becomes entirely transient, handmade sketchbooks are never far from my fingertips!

This session is usually 2 hours long and is best suited to families and school groups with primary aged children, as it requires a degree of competence with scissors.

If you have an idea or a question, please contact me – I look forward to exploring the possibilities together!
